The Role of Insurance in Financial Planning – Part II

Insurance is more than a monthly expense—it’s a cornerstone of smart financial planning. In this article, Certified Financial Planner™ Kevin Zywna of Wealthway Financial Advisors in Hampton Roads explains how to strategically use insurance for risk management, asset protection, income preservation, and peace of mind. From choosing the right type of life insurance to understanding health, auto, property, and umbrella coverage, you’ll learn why we recommend to assume the risk you can afford to take, but transfer the risks you can't. The result: lower premiums, stronger protection, and greater financial confidence.

As a Certified Financial Planner™ serving families and professionals across Hampton Roads, I’m often asked how insurance fits into a broader wealth plan. Insurance is more than a monthly bill—it’s a tool to transfer risks that could otherwise devastate your finances. Used wisely, insurance provides risk management, asset protection, income preservation, and peace of mind.

What Is Insurance?

At its core, insurance is a financial tool that transfers financial risk from an individual who can’t afford to assume that risk to an insurance company that is much larger and more diversified, that can afford to absorb the risk in exchange for a premium payment. Behind the scenes, actuarial math and underwriting determine how policies are priced and when claims are paid. But for planning purposes, it’s best to focus on insurance’s role in protecting your long-term financial security.

A Smarter Philosophy: Insure Strategically

At Wealthway Financial Advisors, our philosophy is simple:

  • Assume the risk you can afford to take, but transfer the risks you can’t. In assuming the risks you can afford – use your emergency fund to cover small, routine expenses.
  • Transfer the risks you cannot afford. Protect yourself against catastrophic losses—events that could derail your financial future.

This approach not only reduces unnecessary premiums (freeing up funds for other growth-oriented purposes) but also ensures you’re covered when it matters most.

Example: Small vs. Catastrophic Risks

  • Don’t insure small risks. A $20 doctor copay or a cracked windshield is manageable if you have savings.
  • Do insure catastrophic risks. A house fire, six-figure hospital bill, or major liability lawsuit could devastate your assets

By raising deductibles and self-insuring minor risks, you can lower premiums while maintaining protection where it truly counts.

Key Types of Insurance in Financial Planning

Life Insurance

Life insurance is a cornerstone of many financial plans, but choosing the right type matters.

  • Term Life Insurance: Pure protection for a set period (e.g., 20 years). It’s affordable and ideal while raising children or covering large financial obligations.
  • Whole Life Insurance: Permanent coverage with a cash value component. While more costly, it may serve specific estate or legacy needs.
  • Universal Life Insurance: Offers flexible premiums and benefits, often used for more complex planning scenarios as it often includes an investment component.

Our view: Most families benefit most from term coverage during high-need years. If you save and invest consistently, your long-term assets should eventually replace the need for permanent life insurance.

Health Insurance

Health insurance protects against the extraordinary cost of medical care. Options include.

  • Employer coverage (common, but not the only option).
  • ACA Marketplace plans (with potential subsidies).
  • Medicare and Medicaid (for retirees or lower-income households).
  • TRICARE (for military families).

Tip: Manage your pocket exposure—reserving insurance for catastrophic medical events rather than routine visits.

Auto Insurance

Virginia drivers must carry coverage, but the right structure matters.

  • Liability: Protects against damage or injury you cause to others.
  • Collision: Covers damage to your vehicle in an accident.
  • Comprehensive: Covers theft, vandalism, or weather damage.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: Critical in Hampton Roads where not all drivers are properly insured.

Premiums depend on driving record, vehicle type, location, and even credit score. Good financial habits often lead to better rates.

Property Insurance

Homeowners and renters alike need protection against damage, theft, or liability:

  • Homeowners Insurance: Covers your home’s structure, contents, and liability.
  • Renters Insurance: Protects personal property and liability.
  • Specialty Coverage: Flood, hurricane, or earthquake policies—essential in regions with higher natural-disaster risk.

Tip: Always confirm whether you’re insured for replacement cost (rebuilding at today’s prices) versus actual cash value (original purchase price minus depreciation).

Umbrella (Liability) Insurance

For affluent families, umbrella insurance may be the most cost-effective risk protection available. For a few hundred dollars annually, it provides an extra $1M+ in liability coverage above auto and home policies. This safeguard helps protect assets from lawsuits and unexpected claims—often a simpler and cheaper solution than complex legal structures.

Why Insurance Matters in Wealth Planning

Insurance premiums often rank just below taxes and mortgage costs in household budgets. Reviewing coverage periodically, shopping rates, and aligning policies with your financial plan ensures you aren’t over-insuring small risks while leaving major risks unprotected.

When integrated thoughtfully, insurance allows you to:

  • Protect assets you’ve worked hard to build.
  • Safeguard income and family lifestyle.
  • Gain peace of mind knowing your wealth plan is resilient.
